Built-In Microwaves With Trim Kits: Every Current Model Compared

If you're looking for a built-in microwave with a trim kit, you've got more options than you might think — and more limitations than the manufacturers like to advertise. This is a rundown of every current model available, organized by trim kit size, so you can figure out which setup actually works for your kitchen.

A few things to understand before we get into it.

Trim kits come in three standard external widths: 24 inches, 27 inches, and 30 inches. The 27 and 30 are by far the most common. These widths are designed to line up with standard wall ovens — so a 30" trim kit sits flush above a 30" oven and creates that clean, vertical sightline that makes a kitchen look intentional.

The catch is that your cabinet cutout has to match the specs called out in the manufacturer's installation instructions — exactly. Not close. Not approximately. If your existing opening is off by half an inch in height, or slightly too shallow, the installation won't work without modifying the cabinet. That's true for every OEM trim kit on this list.

If your situation is more flexible — new build, major renovation, or you're willing to modify the cabinet — any of these setups can work well. If you're replacing an existing built-in and your cabinet is already cut, scroll to the bottom and read the section on custom trim kits first. It may save you a lot of time.

27-Inch Trim Kit Options

GE / GE Profile / Café

GE has the widest selection of any brand. The GE Profile PEB7227ANDD (2.2 cu ft, 1100W) is one of the most common built-in setups you'll see. It pairs with the JX7227SLSS trim kit for a 27" install and the JX7230SLSS for 30". There's also a black finish version — the PEB7227DLBB — with matching black trim kits (JX7227DLBB and JX7230DLBB).

The Café line adds matte finishes. The CEB515P2NSS uses the CX152P2MSS (27") or CX153P2MSS (30") in brushed stainless. Matte black and matte white versions are also available — the matte black uses CX152P3MDS / CX153P3MDS, and matte white uses CX152P4MWM / CX153P4MWM. If you're going for a matte finish and want it to match across your wall oven and microwave, the Café line is the way to do it.

A few models in the GE lineup — the JES1656SRSS, JES1657SMSS, JES2051SNSS, JES2251SJ, and JES3072SHSS — do not have OEM trim kits available. If you want to do a built-in install with any of these, you'd need to go the custom trim kit route.

Model 27" Trim Kit 30" Trim Kit Finish Capacity
PEB7227ANDD JX7227SLSS JX7230SLSS Stainless 2.2 cu ft, 1100W
PEB7227DLBB JX7227DLBB JX7230DLBB Black 2.2 cu ft, 1100W
PEB7226SFSS JX7227SFSS JX7230SFSS Stainless 2.2 cu ft
PES7227SLSS JX7227SLSS JX7230SLSS Stainless 2.2 cu ft
PEM31SFSS JX827SFSS JX830SFSS Stainless 1.1 cu ft
PEB9159SJSS JX9152SJSS JX9153SJSS Stainless 1.5 cu ft
CEB1590SSSS JX9152SJSS JX9153SJSS Stainless 1.5 cu ft
CEB515P2NSS CX152P2MSS CX153P2MSS Brushed Stainless (Café) 1.5 cu ft

CEB515P4NWM CX152P4MWM CX153P4MWM Matte White (Café) 1.5 cu ft

Worth knowing: There are documented reports of the GE trim kits — specifically the JX7230SLSS and JX7230ELES — running tight enough that the microwave door can rub against the trim frame if installation alignment is off. Not universal, but worth knowing going in. Take your time during install.

Panasonic

Panasonic uses Inverter technology — a continuous power delivery system rather than the on/off cycling most microwaves use. The practical result is more even heating and better defrosting. The NN-SN966S (2.2 cu ft, 1250W) and NN-SD945S (2.2 cu ft, dial control) are both current and pair with the NN-TK922SS (27") and NN-TK932SS (30"). The NN-SN766S (1.6 cu ft) uses the NN-TK722SS (27") and NN-TK732SS (30").

The 1.2 cu ft NN-SN686S only has a 27" option — the NN-TK621SS. No 30" kit is available for that model.

NN-GT69KSC NN-TK72LSSAP NN-TK73LSSAP Flat kit
NN-SA631B NN-TK722SSAP NN-TK732SSAP Back vent type

Worth knowing: Panasonic has discontinued OEM trim kits for a large portion of their catalog. Models including the NN-CD989S, NN-CDS8MS, NN-CV87QS, NN-CV88QS, NN-H765BF, and NN-H965WF no longer have available trim kits. If you own one of these, a custom trim kit is the only built-in option. Same goes for the NN-SB428S, NN-SB636B, NN-SC668S, and NN-SD372S — no OEM kit was ever produced for those models.

Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and JennAir

These are all under the same corporate umbrella. The trim kits across Whirlpool and KitchenAid are largely interchangeable — the MK2227AS (27") and MK2230AS (30") are used across multiple models in both lines.

JennAir JMDFS24GS W11170223 W10837589 27" stainless
JennAir JMW3430DB W11312047 W11290015 Black Noir flush install

Worth knowing: The Whirlpool and KitchenAid OEM trim kits (MK2160AZ, MK2167AS, MK2227AS series) have a well-documented reputation problem. Despite being sold as stainless steel trim kits, multiple consumer reviews describe the actual material as plastic with a stainless-colored coating or foil. The exposed edges are often black plastic. For a mid-century or contemporary kitchen where the trim is sitting next to real stainless appliances, this is worth factoring in.

Frigidaire Gallery and Professional

Frigidaire's built-in lineup is straightforward — Gallery and Professional tiers, each with 27" and 30" options. Their trim kits are generally well-regarded for build quality and installation hardware relative to this price point.

Segment Model 27" Trim Kit 30" Trim Kit Finish
Professional PMBS3080AF PMTK2780AF PMTK3080AF Stainless
Gallery GMBS3068AF GMTK2768AF GMTK3068AF Stainless
Gallery GMBS3068AD GMTK2768AD GMTK3068AD Dark Stainless
Standard FGMO226NUFA FMTK2727AB FMTK3027AS Various

Worth knowing: Frigidaire calls out specific clearance requirements in their installation instructions — 3 inches of side clearance inside the cabinet, 21 inches of door swing clearance, and a minimum of 12 inches above the unit before the duct assembly is placed. These aren't suggestions. If your cabinet doesn't have that headroom, the installation won't be feasible with their standard trim kit.

Samsung and LG

Samsung's current built-in-compatible offering is the MS19M8000AS (1.9 cu ft, 950W), with the MA-TK8020TG (27") and MA-TK8020TS (30") trim kits. LG offers the LMC2075ST and LMC2075BD (2.0 cu ft, Smart Inverter, 1200W), both pairing with the 30" MK2030NST or MK2030NBD respectively. LG does not currently offer a 27" trim kit for these models.

Brand Model 27" Trim Kit 30" Trim Kit Notes
Samsung MS19M8000AS MA-TK8020TG MA-TK8020TS 1.9 cu ft, 950W, ceramic interior
LG LMC2075ST N/A MK2030NST 2.0 cu ft, Smart Inverter, 1200W
LG LMC2075BD N/A MK2030NBD 2.0 cu ft, Black Stainless
LG MSER2090S N/A MK2030NST 2.0 cu ft, Sensor Cook

Worth knowing: The Samsung trim kits (MA-TK8020TS) have a documented finish quality issue — multiple buyers report the coating or paint coming off with normal handling. LG's kits have a better track record on materials. That said, LG's post-warranty service infrastructure is thin. If a component fails after the warranty period, getting it repaired can be difficult and expensive.

Sharp

Sharp's traditional built-in countertop models use separately purchased trim kits. The SMC2266HS (2.2 cu ft, 1200W) uses the SKM430F9HS (30") or the SKM427F9HS (27"). The older SMC2265GS uses the 27" kit.

Sharp's Microwave Drawer format — the KB-6524PS and SMD2470AS — is a different animal. These are 24" wide, designed to install under the counter in a base cabinet, and they don't use a trim kit at all. Ventilation is built into the chassis. If you've got base cabinet space and want the cleanest possible look, drawers are worth considering. That said, they're substantially more expensive, and the under-counter placement isn't for everyone.

Luxury Brand Options

At the top end, you've got Bosch, Thermador, Wolf, Viking, Dacor, Fisher & Paykel, and Bertazzoni. These are sold as package appliances — the microwave and trim kit are designed to match the wall oven below it exactly, in terms of handle design, metal finish, and hardware.

Brand Microwave Model Trim Kit Notes
Bosch HMB30155UC HMT5055 (30") / HMT5755 (27") 300 Series, pairs with Bosch ovens
Thermador MBCS MBT30CS (30") Side-swing door, beverage sensor
Wolf MS24 / MW24 829310 (E-Series) 1200W, 10-level power, 24"
Viking VMOC506SS VMTK277SS (27") 1.5 cu ft convection
Dacor Professional ADMWTK301S (30") Custom finish integration
Fisher & Paykel Series 5 MOTTK-30-SS (30") Stainless
Bertazzoni PRO Series FR30PROX (30") Italian design match
Summit MDR245SS SMBI27TK30 Compact, includes trim kit

The trim kits in this tier are a different quality level — heavy-gauge 304 stainless, no plastic anywhere. Wolf in particular has a strong reputation for fit, finish, and support.

That being said, there's a risk that comes with locking into a luxury package: if the microwave dies and gets discontinued, you may find yourself with a matching wall oven and a gap in the cabinetry where the microwave used to be. Thermador and Wolf have both had models discontinued, and replacement units don't always fit the existing trim kit or cutout. It's a real consideration if you're planning for 20+ years.

The Problem Most People Run Into

Every OEM trim kit on this list is engineered to fit one specific microwave (or a short list of compatible models) in a cabinet that's cut to exact dimensions. The width has to be right. The height has to be right. The depth has to be right.

If you're doing a new build or a full renovation and the cabinet is being cut fresh to spec, that's fine — you pick a unit, follow the cutout template, and it works.

If you're replacing an existing built-in, it's a different story. Manufacturers change their microwave dimensions constantly. A trim kit from five years ago won't necessarily fit a new microwave, even from the same brand. And the cabinet that was cut for the old unit may not match the cutout requirements for the new kit. We've written about this in more detail here.

The Other Option: Any Microwave, Custom Trim Kit

There's a fourth approach that doesn't get talked about much, and it solves all of the problems above: skip the OEM combo entirely and use any microwave paired with a custom-made trim kit.

Here's why this matters.

With an OEM kit, you're choosing a microwave based on what trim kits exist for it. With a custom kit, you choose the microwave based on what you actually want — the features, the capacity, the wattage, the brand — and the trim kit is built around it. You're not constrained to the eight or ten models that happen to have a kit available.

It also solves the cabinet problem. A custom kit is built to your cabinet opening specifically. If your opening is a non-standard height, or if you're working around an opening that was cut for a different unit a decade ago, the custom kit accommodates that. There's no template to match.

A few other things to know about how our custom kits work:

  • They're made from solid stainless steel — not plastic with a stainless coating
  • They're available in brushed stainless, matte black, matte white, and black stainless/graphite, so they can match a range of appliance finishes
  • The face frame attaches magnetically, so you can remove it without tools if you ever need to access the cabinet or pull the microwave
  • Ventilation is built in — slots along the top and bottom of the frame provide airflow without the front-facing louvers you see on most OEM kits
  • Installation takes about 30 minutes and is often simpler than OEM kits

The process is simple: you order the kit, we send you a measurement guide, you submit your measurements and photos, and we build it to your specs.
