We get asked this a lot — "How do I make my refrigerator taller?" Usually it comes from homeowners who have empty space above their fridge or a gap underneath, and the whole thing just looks short and out of place in the opening.
The good news is you have two solid options. One adds visual height. The other physically raises the unit. Both get you closer to that built-in, Sub-Zero or Viking kind of look — without spending Sub-Zero or Viking money.
Option 1 (easiest): Add a Decorative Top Grille
If you've got a gap above your refrigerator — whether it's sitting inside cabinetry or a drywall opening — a custom stainless steel top grille can close that space and make your fridge look significantly taller.
This is the easier of the two options. The grille mounts above the refrigerator and fills in the void so you don't have a big empty space staring back at you. It gives the appliance more vertical presence and a clean, finished look.
A few things to consider:
There are several mounting options available to accomodate almost any set up, including for cabinets, sheetrock, or masonry.
The result mimics the look of a high-end built-in refrigerator — the kind you'd see in a luxury kitchen — at a fraction of the cost. A lot of people don't even know this is an option, and it's one of the most cost-effective ways to change how your kitchen looks.
Option 2: Build a Platform and Add a Bottom Grille
This approach takes a little more work, but it's something we've seen our clients do many times.
The idea is simple. You build a sturdy wooden platform — stacked 2x4 boards work well — and set the refrigerator on top of it. This physically raises the unit by a few inches.
Once the refrigerator is elevated, you install a custom stainless steel bottom grille that snaps into place magnetically. The grille hides the wooden platform completely and gives the base of the refrigerator a clean, finished look.
Most homeowners raise their fridge enough to accommodate a 4" to 5" bottom grille. That height grounds the refrigerator visually and gives it a taller, more balanced look from top to bottom.
Which Option Is Right for You?
Either approach works on its own and plenty of customers do both — a top grille to close the gap above and a bottom grille to add height below. Together, they can add several inches of visual height to your refrigerator and give you a look that rivals appliances costing thousands more.
